Day 112 Trusting God’s Unfailing Covenant

Trusting God's Unfailing Covenant by Torrie Slaughter

Dear Friend,

In times of uncertainty and adversity, we find solace in the unchanging character of God and the steadfastness of His promises. Today, let’s journey through Psalm 89:38-52 and discover the enduring faithfulness of our Heavenly Father, even in the face of challenges and setbacks.

Verse 38: “But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one.”

The psalmist begins by acknowledging the reality of human suffering and the challenges faced by God’s chosen people. Despite their failings and shortcomings, God remains faithful, even in times of discipline and correction.

Verses 39-40: “You have renounced the covenant with your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust. You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins.”

The psalmist laments the apparent abandonment of God’s covenant and the destruction of the nation’s defenses. Yet, even in the midst of despair, there is a glimmer of hope as the psalmist turns to God in prayer and supplication.

Verses 41-42: “All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice.”

The psalmist describes the humiliation and suffering endured by God’s people at the hands of their enemies. In times of trial, it can be easy to lose sight of God’s promises and succumb to despair. Yet, even in the darkest moments, God remains sovereign and in control.

Verses 43-45: “Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword and have not supported him in battle. You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground. You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with a mantle of shame.”

Despite the apparent defeat and humiliation experienced by God’s people, the psalmist holds fast to the belief that God’s promises endure forever. Even when it seems like all hope is lost, God remains faithful to His covenant and His people.

Verses 46-48: “How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all humanity!”

In moments of desperation, the psalmist cries out to God, pleading for His intervention and mercy. Yet, even in the midst of anguish and uncertainty, there is a recognition of the transient nature of human life and the need for divine intervention.

Verses 49-52: “Lord, where is your former great love, which in your faithfulness you swore to David? Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations, the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked, with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.”

The psalmist concludes by appealing to God’s unfailing love and faithfulness, invoking the covenant promises made to David and his descendants. Despite the challenges and hardships faced by God’s people, there is a steadfast belief in God’s sovereignty and His ability to redeem and restore.

As we reflect on Psalm 89:38-52, let us take comfort in the enduring faithfulness of our Heavenly Father, even in the midst of trials and tribulations. May we hold fast to His promises and trust in His unfailing love, knowing that He is sovereign and His purposes will prevail.
