Day 117 Rejoicing in the Sovereign Reign of the Lord

Rejoicing in the Sovereign Reign of the Lord by Torrie Slaughter

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Today, let us embark on a journey through the Psalms, specifically Psalms 97 and 98, where we encounter profound expressions of joy and praise for the sovereign reign of our Lord. As we delve into these timeless passages, may our hearts be stirred to worship and our spirits uplifted by the truth found within.

Psalm 97 opens with a resounding declaration: “The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice.” (Psalm 97:1, NIV) What a glorious proclamation of the absolute sovereignty of our God! As we meditate on these words, may we be reminded that no power on earth or in heaven can rival the authority and majesty of our Creator.

The psalmist continues to paint a vivid picture of God’s righteousness and justice, declaring, “Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.” (Psalm 97:2, NIV) Even in the midst of darkness and uncertainty, we can take comfort in the unshakeable foundation of God’s character. He is a God of perfect righteousness and unwavering justice, who will one day set all things right.

As we transition to Psalm 98, we are invited to join in the chorus of praise and celebration: “Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.” (Psalm 98:1, NIV) What a fitting response to the revelation of God’s greatness and glory! Let us lift our voices in joyful praise, exalting the name of our Savior who has triumphed over sin and death.

The psalmist urges us to make a joyful noise to the Lord, to sing praises to Him with all our hearts and instruments. (Psalm 98:4-6) Let every corner of creation resound with the melody of His love and grace! For He is the King of all the earth, who reigns with power and authority.

As we conclude our reflection on Psalms 97 and 98, let us take to heart the psalmist’s exhortation: “Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy.” (Psalm 98:7-8, NIV) May our lives be a symphony of praise, echoing the eternal truth that our God reigns supreme.
