Trusting in the Lord’s Protection by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 125 is a psalm of confidence, assurance, and steadfast trust in God’s protection. As one of the Songs of Ascents, it was sung by pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem, reminding them that just as the city was surrounded by mountains, God surrounds His people with His unwavering care and security. This psalm invites us to rest in the peace and protection that comes from trusting in the Lord.

1. Steadfast Like Mount Zion

“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.” (Psalm 125:1)

The psalm opens with a powerful metaphor: those who trust in God are as immovable and enduring as Mount Zion. This imagery conveys a deep sense of stability and permanence. When we place our trust in God, we are anchored, no matter how turbulent our circumstances may be. This verse encourages us to root ourselves in faith, knowing that God’s protection is unshakable.

2. Surrounded by God’s Presence

“As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people both now and forevermore.”(Psalm 125:2)

The psalmist beautifully illustrates God’s encompassing presence. Just as Jerusalem is encircled by natural fortifications, God’s presence surrounds His people, offering both spiritual and physical protection. This verse reassures us that God’s care is constant, extending beyond our immediate circumstances into eternity.

3. A Promise of Peace

“Peace be on Israel.” (Psalm 125:5)

The psalm concludes with a blessing of peace, which flows from trusting in God’s justice and sovereignty. Though the wicked may flourish temporarily, God’s righteousness prevails, and His people can rest in His ultimate plan.
