Bible Study & Devotional Day 173

Written by: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 17:22, ‘A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.’

🔴Cheer in Gratitude

Reading through the Bible yearly helps strengthen our capacity to be obedient to God’s Word. There are many benefits from creating a daily routine that spills over into other tasks. By keeping God first, we develop a deeper understanding of love.

God abundantly gives, and His love endures forever.

As you read each day, think about Jesus and His role within the passages. How are the Old Testament miracles foreshadowing Christ’s New Testament salvation?

We can choose to see the miracles of God through His daily work or arrogantly turn a blind eye. However, if we crush the spirits of those desiring to partner with us, we destroy the fruit of that relationship. Therefore, may we work diligently to fill our containers with life-producing oil.

Cheerfully give from the heart and serve with gratitude.

Prayer: Abba Father, we want to live the love You have shown Your servants. Let our attitudes, words, and behaviors please You. Let us treat each person with kindness and respect. No matter their role within our lives, remind us of the blessing You give through them. We have the opportunity to be a reflection of Your great kindness.

Bible Study & Devotional Day 159

Written by: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 16:28-30AMP ‘A perverse man spreads strife And one who gossips separates intimate friends. A violent and exceedingly covetous man entices his neighbor [to sin], And leads him in a way that is not good. He who [slyly] winks his eyes does so to plot perverse things, And he who compresses his lips [as if in a secret signal] brings evil to pass. ‘

🔴Church, Friends, & Business (Oh My?!)

In 1 Kings chapter 5, we began the detailed description to construct the Temple. King Solomon orchestrated a deal (God’s blessing) with King Hiram of Tyre. In exchange for the wood from Lebanon, King Solomon would provide food to his household.

Fast forward to Psalm 127:1 ‘Unless the Lord builds the house; they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain.’

When God is in the details and working, we can trust He will be glorified through our efforts. Our God is one of order and His command to love Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

People will be delighted to work alongside those who humbly serve. They are in the business of winning souls for Christ under every circumstance. As you read today’s passages, think about the transactions and agreements you’ve entered. Will it glorify God?

A Daily Purpose

Bible Study & Devotional Day 158

Written by: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture:  Acts 5:11 ‘Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events. ‘

🔴Internal Threats

As King Solomon takes the throne after his father King David’s death, we read how he brings things into order. There was a great deal to sort through. The army commanders, priests, advisors, and even family presented problems, if not addressed, would be devastating to his reign.
In 1 Kings 2, King David instructed Solomon to obey God’s commands and to remain faithful. He also detailed how to deal with the enemies of the throne. We read that Solomon was gracious to Shimei by ordering him under ‘house arrest.’ However, Shimei disregarded Solomon’s kindness and chased after a runaway servant. Perhaps Shimei felt his three years of good behavior permitted him to violate a direct command. I wonder what was so important about his servant that he needed to recapture him personally?

A Different Approach to Seize Power

Proverbs 16:25 ‘There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.’

Rejected as king and likely bitter about his short-lived reign Adonijah asks Bathsheba for help (1 Kings 2:17). The young virgin that kept his father David warm and tended to his needs was unmarried. Adonijah asks for her hand in marriage. Well, that would be a sweet if not romantic end if not for the apparent disrespect. King Solomon rightfully viewed the marriage of Abishag, his father David’s attendant (it is stated they were never intimate 1 Kings 1:4), to his brother Adonijah as a threat to his authority.

Peace

King Solomon wisely removed the internal threats as they presented themselves. He was proactive and thwarted corruption.
As you read today’s passages, think about your power of persuasion. Are you handling internal threats within your home, business, church, or organization? Or are you towing the lie and blindly sticking to the story (Acts 5:7-10)?
You have the power to decide how those entrusted to you will fear the Lord our God (Acts 5:11). Be aware of your every action.

Bible Study & Devotional Day 157

Written by: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 16:24 Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

🔴Wise Words Are A Healing Balm

Have you ever felt discouraged and at your wit’s end? I certainly have, and it fills me with doubt and frustration because I feel abandoned.

In those intense times of indecision, I remember that God is near and His Word can heal my inner turmoil. Let’s look at a couple of passages that remind us of God’s great grace, mercy, and wisdom.

Proverbs 12:18 tells us the tongue of the wise is beneficial. How is wisdom good? The decisions we make include consequences. Leaving things ‘undone’ will undoubtedly cause friction down the road. By asking God to help us align with His desires brings us closer to Him. His comfort is the peace our soul needs.

In Proverbs 4:22, we read that seeking wisdom is a nutritional medicine for our body. There are many pharmaceuticals, both natural and synthetic; we can ingest to make us feel better. But the truth is that until we have a correct posture before the Lord, all human antidotes will be temporary.

As you read today’s passages, think about your advisors. Are they rebelling against God because of selfish ambition, laziness, or confusion? Ask yourself, is it wise to seek wisdom from a fool? Pay attention to behavioral patterns.
