Guiding Scripture: Romans 14:10 ‘You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.’

🔴Or the Highway…

Opinions. We all have them. Some people intently listen and try to find the middle ground, while others are more manipulative. They ‘know’ best, and their preferences deserve preferential treatment.

In Romans 14, the Apostle Paul warns and guides the believers to be loving in all situations. Especially those that could create unnecessary division.

Fruitless arguments and power struggles are not beneficial in Kingdom building.

The Jews disagreed with Paul’s teaching of the Gospel and also disagreed with each other. Arguments over insignificant things like food and Sabbath day divided the community. Oddly enough, we still debate these issues today.

The goal in this life is to behave like a member of God’s kingdom. As Christ-followers, we can ask ourselves: “what leads to peace?”

My way or the highway attitudes cause division and hostile heart conditions. For the weaker believers, it causes a stumbling block and teaches that preference trumps God’s love. Judgment belongs to God. For those in the body of Christ, it is our responsibility to cultivate peace and affection in the spirit of faith.

Romans 14:7, ‘For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone.

Are you living in unity with Him or carving out a different ‘direction’?

Romans 14:10 ‘You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister ? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.’

We can trust God to water the seeds we plant of good leadership, teaching, and love. Faithfully guide those who struggle on the road of self-centeredness and ask God to soften your heart. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, encourage those under your care to seek harmony. God’s Truth is a healing balm when applied with His loving touch.

Prayer: Lord, we want to bring You glory through our thoughts and deeds. Father, please help a renewed mind drive us and transformed worldview be active in our hearts. May we consistently demonstrate Christ’s love and be expressions of love for You and Your people. Amen

Guiding Scripture: Romans 5:6-7 (emphasis added)At just the right time, Christ died for ungodly people. He died for us when we had no power of our own. It is unusual for anyone to die for a godly person. Maybe someone would be willing to die for a good person.

🔴Unusual

As the Apostle Paul goes into a deeper discussion about atonement, his statements to the Jews and Gentiles reflect God’s great mercy.

“While we were yet, sinners.” (Romans 5:8) In our state of complete powerlessness, God sent His Son Jesus as the unblemished Lamb to die for the world’s sins.

His Jewish audience would thoroughly understand God’s sacrificial system of the Old Testament. Their practice of sacrifice-(placing their sins on a flawless animal) was for reconciliation. The Pagans also practice a version of this to their deities (1 Kings 4:4-11).

To understand Christ’s transcendent atoning for our sins is incomprehensible. As finite beings, that type of love for His image-bearers is the tension with which we struggle.

John 15:13, No one has greater love than the one who gives his life for his friends.

And we know Jesus consistently prayed for those who “knew not what they did” (Luke 23:34) and reminds us to forgive one another. To love is an unusual sacrifice when we’ve experienced abuse, trauma, and rejection. Loving those who do not love us back is the thread of being blameless before God.

As you read today, think about why the Old Testament sacrificial system was necessary. How did it prepare the hearts of God’s chosen people to comprehend the transcendent nature of Jesus’ work on the cross? While ethically we deserve death (Romans 1:32), God proves He so loved the world that He provided divine reconciliation.

What will motivate you to be prosperous? Your sin debt paid, the victory you can walk in, or the justice you receive? God wants to restore us to a right relationship. Faith covered by grace declares we are not guilty.  Isn’t that unusual?

Prayer: Lord, because of your sacrifice, we can break free of the bondage of sin. That includes the way we think, act, and behave. Would you please help us understand the importance of your habits to acknowledge our unbeneficial actions? Please be with us as we wrestle with arrogance, pride, and vanity so we can humble ourselves before You. We want the ‘hell’ in our ways to be removed. You are our Redeemer, and without you, we can do nothing. We submit to your will Lord. Amen

Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 18:24 “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.’

🔴I Am A Friend

According to Google, a friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people. It is a more vital form of interpersonal bond than an association and studied in academic fields such as communication, social psychology, anthropology, and philosophy.

We learn how to be a friend by becoming one.

Following the example Christ left for us, we can study God’s Word and apply it to our lives. While we will not be perfect, we can develop a heart for God. Jesus tells us in John 15:14, “You are My friends if you do what I command you.” The command is to love Him, ourselves, and our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus no longer calls us servants because He has taught us everything through the divine Word. (John 15:15) He is our connection to God the Father.

Friendship Training

Prayer is a powerful tool, but like any passion we have to practice, exercising our spiritual muscles. We have the power and discernment to learn and follow God’s word. By spending time with God and getting to know Him, we can imitate His divine command to love. Turn to God and become healthy in mind, body, and spirit. Enjoy the freedom of knowing God is an essential part of our day. He is our priority.

Hear His Voice

Learning to listen and give credit to God for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding develops our character. We show ourselves as righteous and lovely when we do things according to God’s ways. Love must be sincere. In that sincerity, we honor God and cling to what is good. (Romans 12:9)

Prayer: Father in Heaven, we thank you for being an ever-present help in our lives. We worship and give praise to your Holy Name. As we learn to walk closer in your command, teach us to do small things with great love. Help us acknowledge fear, arrogance, and pride when we are in conversation to recognize what relationships those temporary emotions destroy. Let our behavior glorify you and show us as living expressions of Your Son Jesus. Amen.

A Daily Purpose

Bible Study & Devotional Day 182

Written by: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 18:8 ‘The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.’

🔴The Next Scandal

Gossip. It’s what brings people to the water cooler, social media, beauty salons, barbershops, and church. We want to know who did what, why, how and take notes or screenshots to keep the narrative going. The news spreads like wildfire until someone tells the truth.

AND THEN

-everything comes to a slow-motion screeching halt, sucking out the power and enthusiasm. Good Gracious! The nerve of those uppity, pretentious folks with the audacity to take care over what they speak and hear since words can kill or give life. What an annoyance!?!

Trusting God

In today’s assigned reading in 2 Kings 18, Hezekiah begins his rule. He admits he has done wrong (2 Kings 18:14) and begins to reestablish the sacrificial system, reorganize the priests, and outline their responsibilities. Hezekiah destroys the pagan high places, altars, and the bronze serpent Moses used in Sinai.

The spaces and purposes for honoring pagan gods became dust.

Hezekiah and Josiah(2 Kings 23:25) were the only two who turn the gossip people fed on into God’s nourishing truth. While it may not feel like we are at war or weapons aren’t being formed against the people of Christ, evil is still rampant. Each time a noteworthy Christ-follower is brought down by scandal, think how quickly the news spreads.

As For Us

We have power over what we digest and what we want others to consume through us. While people may not understand God’s will for our lives, we must move forward, trusting the Lord once it is clear to us. The new church saw the Great Commission as scandalous. However, telling others about the salvation of Christ and explaining how the world is an interconnected organism under the rule of God is a truth serum.

Prayer: Lord, let us be compelled by the Holy Spirit to do, say, and act as Your ambassadors. Even in our fear, may our hearts not be troubled- may we who believe grow in wisdom and discernment. Amen
