A Daily Purpose

Bible Study & Devotional Day 171

Written by: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture:  1 Kings 22:7 ‘But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can inquire of?”

🔴The ‘Yes’ People

I’m sure many of us have desired the Lord to bless an idea. We think it is the best solution, and in our excitement, we persuade others to buy in.

In today’s reading, King Jehosophat tells King Ahab to consult Yahweh before going to war. King Ahab did inquire through 400 lords. The term used is Adonay which meant anyone with authority, whether human or divine, could give advice.

1 Kings 22:7 is my lesson, and God shot.

Seeking wisdom from people of God should be done with discernment. Everyone who claims to follow the Lord Jesus Christ may not be faithful witnesses. Jehosophat knew the prophets King Ahab summoned were Baal worshipers, and he wanted an answer from the Most High God.

If we surround ourselves with people who fear challenging our plans or going against the desires of our hearts, that is sorcery. It’s time to break the spells by first seeking forgiveness and then repenting of sins. Those in our circles should have a reverential fear of God. Check your ‘yes people’ and ask if they feel comfortable speaking the truth from God.

Prayer: Lord, lead us in Your ways and help us to follow your wisdom. Our fear is of Your mighty nature; please do not let us make people our idols. Remove the false prophets from our lives that we may be Your light shining in the darkness. Your Word reminds us that we cannot be spiritually blind and lead others. Continue to work within the hearts of your people. Thank You, gracious Abba Father, Amen.

🟥 Take Action

Get Clear:

Divided thinking is not beneficial. Commit to submitting to the One who is in control. James 4:7 Submit yourselves, therefore, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Put things in Order! Get Organized!

Paul writes in Ephesians 6:11-12 Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Let’s get prepared and see ourselves from both sides.

The enemy wants us to lord over one another as though we are supposed to subdue people. But that isn’t what the Word of God says! In Genesis 1:28, God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

A Daily Purpose

Bible Study & Devotional Day 91

Written By Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture:Luke 9:46-48

🔴 Above You But, Under God (From the Gospel of Luke 24 Day Devotional)

  • Narcissistic personality disorder — one of several types of personality disorders — is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of extreme confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that’s vulnerable to the slightest criticism. (Mayo Clinic)

In today’s reading, we observe a few different personalities. At the forefront is a desire to be first. The above definition of a narcissistic personality is there to help frame our Bible study. We hurt others when we don’t hold ourselves accountable. As you read, think about the ways you have impacted the environment of your home, office, organization, or church. God is our ultimate healer, but it begins with telling the truth.

Luke 9:25 Insecurity in Christ breeds arguments, discord, jealousy, and envy. It brings out the competitive sin nature, an elitist attitude- being “seen” as better than everyone else. The loads we carry, the amount of effort we put into our projects, and how we live our lives should all come from a place of love.

When we want better, we should encourage everyone around us to do so—not seen as the motivator but as disciples of Christ. (read John 13:14-15)

Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. He left the example of how we are to treat each other no matter our perceived status. Who is the greatest among us?…No one if we are all clamoring to lord over one another. (Matthew 20:25)

As we read Luke 9:48

the argument between the disciples appears not to have ended with Jesus’ teaching about humility. Matthew 20:20-24 and Mark 10:35-41 tell us that Salome, James and John’s mother, went to Jesus to request her sons be placed at His right and left hand in His Kingdom. (Matthew 20:20)

Our motivation for asking or suggesting how someone should live, equip, or direct as Christ-followers need to be motivated by the Holy Spirit. Salome’s request caused further tension among the disciples. Matthew 20:24

We may see ourselves in these accounts. Salome wanted the best for her children and was looking towards their earthly future. James and John wanted to be viewed as the greatest among the disciples.

However,

The Son of God was about to die for our sins and wanted the disciples to humble themselves like children to teach and shepherd His flock. We are reading about Christ-followers that did not have a clear understanding of what Jesus was doing. Luke 9:45 Jesus, the Son of God, continued to teach, up to His last breath.

How much more compassion and understanding do you think He has for us?

~Torrie

Points to Ponder:

  1. Who is your competition?
  2. Do you take advantage of others to get what you want?
  3. Is having the best of everything your priority?
  4. Do you easily become impatient or angry if you don’t receive special treatment?

Love Creates Momentum: Leading an Interconnected Life

SHOW NOTES: http://www.ourgivenpurpose.com
👋 Hello People of Purpose!

Welcome to the season 7 finale of Our Given Purpose the podcast! Over the last twelve weeks, we have discussed several topics, but investment was the root. What is our investment in ourselves, others, and most significantly, God?

For the finale, I want to focus on the investment of planning with God.

Throughout the Bible, we have examples of God’s people partnering with Him. Of course, He chooses these distinct individuals that were always flawed and usually sinned against God somehow while trying to balance God’s holiness and the world’s seductive evil. None of us are immune to the disease of sin and how it destroys trust and relationships.

Theologian Thomas Lea concluded that the 5 dangers for people living life without consideration of God are:

  1. A stifled the prayer life.
  2. It makes one a friend of the world and an enemy of God.
  3. They neglect God’s will in their lives.
  4. Rebelling against God produces insult and slander of fellow believers.
  5.  It produces people who plan their lives without seeking God.

God deserves our time, effort, and energy. Will you purpose to focus on Him more?

Talking on Purpose the Podcast & Internet Show also celebrated the end of season 7. If you have not had a chance to watch or listen we would love to hear your feedback!
