Bible Study & Devotional Day 134

Written By: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:22 ‘But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

🔴 People Pleasing

Have you ever thought you knew better than God? I know I have. It is a sin not to complete a mission and leave something undone. In today’s reading, Saul told the prophet, Samuel, that he kept the best of the cattle and King Agag to sacrifice to the Lord (1 Samuel 15:15). As students of the Bible, we knew Saul’s response wasn’t accurate. In 1 Samuel 15:9, Saul and his army were unwilling to destroy the ‘best’ of the Amalekite things because they had ‘value.’

It is challenging to eliminate something we think will benefit us later.

We create massive inner turmoil when we place the opinions of others before God’s command. After all, we are to love humans, develop unity and harmony, right?! But that’s the intersection and the training we undergo to die to self and obey Christ. We can not declare that God is the all-knowing Director of our lives if we reject His clear instructions.

Saul wavered between two opinions (1 Kings 18:21), those of the people and God’s absolute command. (1 Samuel 15:24) Saul feared his army over the Hand of God.

I have sinned in this way and straddled the fence to maintain my image and arrogantly thought I knew better. In the end, the wavering opinion destroyed relationships. As funny as it seems, people like consistency. Trusting God and following His command leaving nothing undone, may not win us congeniality awards. However, the light of Christ will shine brighter, which testifies to His sovereignty.

Will you choose to please all people or our All-Mighty Savior?

🟥 Take Action

Clarify (Galatians 5:13, Philippians 4:11-12)

How are we intentional about seeking contentment?

Organize (Ephesians 4:29, Colossians 3:9-10)

What are we thinking about and how does it hold up to the truth of God’s Word?

Prepare (Matthew 11:28-30, John 15:13, Ephesians 2:8)

Who sees our remorse for our sins? Are we motivated to save face or submit to Christ by behaving with a godly character and repentant heart?

🟥 The dictionary defines Envy as a desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable attribute belonging to (someone else)

🟥 Notable Quotables:

“Envy finds socially acceptable ways of expressing personal resentment.”~ Charles Swindoll

Theologian Thomas Lea’s Five Dangers for People who Live Without God:

  1. Life without God stifles the prayer life.
  2. It makes them a friend of the world and an enemy of God.
  3. They neglect God’s will in their lives.
  4.  Rebelling against God produces insult and slander of fellow believers.
  5. It produces people who plan their lives without seeking God.

What Can You Do?

Challenge the adversary’s lies by asking God to clarify His plan. We have the Creator’s likeness. We’ve had it since God molded and breathed life into Adam and took Adam’s rib to create Eve. Remember who you are in Christ and the purpose for which He made you.  ~Torrie Slaughter

Defining Present Moment Awareness, The Podcast

SHOW NOTES:
www.OurGivenPurpose.com

👋 Hello, Person of Purpose!

You are actively participating in this 12-week session focused on arrogance and pride. Through these exclusive mentoring sessions, it is our hope that you are able to articulate your feeling in a productive way. Defining Present Moment Awareness is an example of the framework we use to help you achieve that goal.  Share your thoughts in the comment section or on any of our social media pages. We want to hear from you! As we grow in emotional intelligence, we can handle the struggles we know lay ahead. Application is the key to pursuing a life of meaning!

🟥 The Message:

Defining Present Moment Awareness the Podcast. The message of today’s exclusive mentoring session is in three parts Present Moment Awareness.  Colossians 3:16-17 and helps us clarify.  Luke 14:28 helps us organize and 2 Corinthians 12:20 helps us prepare

We begin with the C of copping our purpose. Clarity means determining what we need to be aware of and using Colossians 3:16-17 as a frame. The O of copping our goal is found in Luke 14:28. We organize our thoughts by identifying common struggle areas. Finally, the P of copping our purpose with 2 Corinthians 12:20 as an example of how not to behave.  The answers you provide to the journal prompts, and the exercise will guide you toward a different perspective; this is how we will Clarify.Organize.Prepare.

🔺This session began with an overview of 2 Corinthians 12 in Elements of Arrogance and Pride 101 the Podcast. Our focal scripture for the next 12 weeks is 2 Corinthians 12:20. The Apostle Paul helps us because he was obedient to the will of God. Let’s glean from his messages to the people of Corinth today. We do not want our Lord and Savior to return, finding us in the same state of rebellion or wickedness. To be transformed by the renewing of our minds means we must do our work. Clarifying, organizing, and preparing to do our assignment each day takes strategic planning with God.

🔺Scriptures in this episode:

Colossians 3:16-17, Luke 14:28, 2 Corinthians 12:20

Catfished??…

Bible Reading: Genesis 2:15-18ESV & Genesis 3:1-6ESV

Gaslighted!! Catfished!! Oh my! Both these terms essentially mean the same thing.

Gaslight- to manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity.

Catfish- to lure (someone) into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona.

No one wants to be scammed. No one wants to lose out on a luxury, or have it swapped for something less glorious; however, it happens every day, and more easily since the invention of the internet. We have all been catfished or gaslighted at some point.

The thief is able to hone in on our insecurities, fears, desires, hopes, and dreams. This gives the thief a way into our minds. When we talk about how scared we are or how badly we desire something, eventually we will be met with the opportunity to overcome it or acquire it. The thief may use this tactic in order to coerce us out of our normal routines and onto his playing field. By manipulating us psychologically the thief will take away time. The time God desires us to have in order to fully develop a relationship with Him and to learn about ourselves. The thief will have us rushing to make decisions; not pausing to consult with the Holy Spirit. Genesis 3:6  **Do you want to get married, have a family, become rich…famous? Is your house big enough, your car new enough, does your body need an overhaul? **  These are just a few questions we will begin to ask ourselves constantly, letting go of our original God focus. It’s how we may be manipulated into doing unthinkable and questionable things. The false hope we are given drives our “new” focus making us willing participants in the insane confusion the Thief wants us in.

There was one rule in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 2:16-17 By obeying this rule everything would be kept in order. The thief sought to destroy this order. (CATFISH—–GASLIGHT)  The serpent disguised himself as a fictitious friend and had Eve question the sanity of God’s one rule and manipulated her desires by giving her false hope. Genesis 3:1-5. The serpent was a master manipulator; unfortunately, we have many “people” here on earth that do just that; they manipulate, befriend, and make us question our sanity. They believe they are working on their own behalf but in truth, they are just underlings fulfilling an evil agenda orchestrated by Satan. Ephesians 6:12

When we take control and give our minds over to God, He will help maneuver us through the schemes we may not be discerning enough to see at first. We are not to let one or even several catastrophic events land us in mental turmoil. By the grace of God we can see the Light and be redeemed…nursed back to mental and spiritual health. Of course, this takes time. When we get to the root of our problems or emotional triggers we can lift up our heads and say “not today Satan, I see your schemes coming and I am prepared!”

A Balanced Purpose Part 4

What irritates you? I mean really i-r-r-i-t-a-t-e-s you? Like fingernails on the chalkboard irritating- getting lost irritating- bad odor coming from the litter box irritating- being cut off in traffic irritating- not being paid for services rendered irritating- flat tire irritating- someone drinking the last cup of coffee irritating!!!! What is it that makes you roll your eyes, throw up your hands, spout angry words and ask: why do other human beings exist? Now while I have you all riled up thinking about being irritated what do you think irritates God about you?

Let’s continue with Zacharias and Elisabeth’s story. How did Zacharias pray? He was unable to talk, so opening his mouth to give thanks, praise, or to complain to God would have been impossible. Of course, he could think about what he wanted to say to God. After all, Zacharias was a Priest, he used his voice often. I believe there are several occupations that we are never fully released from and being a priest is one of them. So how irritated was God at Zacharias?

Well let’s attempt to look at this from God’s perspective:

  1. Zacharias and Elisabeth were righteous and followed the commandments of the Lord.
  2. Zacharias was a Priest from the division of Abijah and Elisabeth was from the daughters of Aaron. So both “ministers” and knowledgeable about the Word of God.
  3. Elisabeth would have had a first-hand understanding of God’s miracles not only from the scrolls but also from her family. In that time the passing down of stories was not only common but expected.
  4. Zacharias and Elisabeth prayed for a child. Likely this was a continuous action.

Now we arrive at the culmination of living righteously, being obedient to the Lord and a prayer being answered.

God sent the angel Gabriel to deliver the news. Zacharias had the audacity to question it. I mean how silly of him, right?! Because we would never do something so idiotic as to have a prayer finally answered but then question how it could possibly happen …would we? Luke 1:18 KJV Our human reasoning is what gets us in trouble. We try to figure out how God could do something from our human perspective and that’s where it all goes downhill. We are NOT God. God is God! If we allowed our inner spirits to control our tongues the result would be different. What we should do is be quiet and wait for further instructions. Yes, I believe that would be the best action. But we just don’t do that..at least not the majority of the time. So we are left with the consequences of our actions. We may be left..

.

.

speechless.

As we go through this life focus on change and the strikingly irritating things we may be doing that brings God to anger. If we focus on how we can be more respectful, loving, and kind to others we may become less irritating.

Matthew 22:37-39

37And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
