Bible Study & Devotional Day 181

Written by: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture: 2 Kings 17:40-41, ‘They would not listen, however, but persisted in their former practices. Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols. To this day, their children and grandchildren continue to do as their ancestors did.’

🔴Introduction to Idolatry

As we read how the kings did evil in the Lord’s sight, we are also aware of the idolatry introduced and established. Each king had the opportunity to develop something as part of their reign. But, unfortunately, most continued with the idolatrous worship of lesser gods.

What’s even more problematic is the statement in 2 Kings 17:41b, which says: ‘to this day, their children and grandchildren continue to do as their ancestors did.’ Most of us take that as at the time of the writing. But truthfully, we are still following the idolatrous ways of our ancestors and mentors.

The Serpent (cunning, crafty, animal) introduced humanity to rebellion in the Garden of Eden. While the Lord walked in the cool of the day, the hearts of man and woman were seduced by power. The power to have something they believed was not accessible.

Obedience and reverence didn’t appear as luxurious.

Not too long ago, I had a conversation with a remarkably talented young lady. She was at the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey and was trying to balance her past and her present. She shared that she was exhausted with the life coach/counselor search. All of them wanted to know about her familial history.

My question to her: What is the secret worth keeping?

By breaking the chains of once-taboo topics opens the path to love, understanding, and acceptance. But, if we cannot face the reality of the hand-me-down idolatry, we will continue to introduce it to the next generation.

As you read today’s passages, think about what you inject into your family and neighbors. Are you passing down idolatry?

Prayer: Lord, let us know You and hear Your voice above all. Amen

Romans 1:18-19, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them because God has shown it to them.”

🔴 ACCOUNTABLE TO SEEK HIM

How acceptable has sin become to believers? Are we as disciples treating sin casually? We often say, All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). Do we use this verse to dismiss our standing for what we know is right?

God’s character is uncompromised. God is righteous, holy, perfect, and He hates sin. When we accept God’s Son, Jesus Christ, His Holy Spirit comes to live within us. We have His power not to sin, but we are sinful because of our flesh. We quench or extinguish His Holy Spirit within us. As we grow and learn more about God and His attributes, our faith should cause us to work and become more like Him. We will live out our faith through a relationship with God, our Father, and those He created. Love and trust are action words, and we know that faith without works is dead.

James 2:20, “Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?”

We know God’s righteous decree and that when we do evil things and approve of those who practice them, we deserve death. For those who trust in Christ, it is worthwhile to retain what God has taught us and know what He expects from us.

Let’s pray: All-knowing, all-seeing, Almighty God, please forgive us and help us to change from our evil ways and turn to you and your goodness so that we might worship you in Spirit and truth as we seek to be doers of your Word.

Amen

🔴 Suicidal Tendencies?!

Colossians 4:2-6 “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.
5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”

Extremely dangerous, hopeless, miserable, morbid, desperate, unhappy, or anxious tendencies, however, stated or categorized, still sums up a defeated attitude of having given up! While not classified as a disease, you can be sure that it is dis’ ease!
Just as a disease needs a cure, a vaccination, and medical attention, so does dis’ ease.

During this Covid-19, we may not be surprised when we get the phone call or hear of family, friends, loved ones, and others who have contracted the disease and have not lived with so many deaths. Yes, it hurts, and yes, it is with compassion that we broke for even those we do not know. This disease may or may not have been preventable. But, what about dis’ ease? How do you handle the phone call telling you that a close family member or friend has committed suicide? Death is death!

When dealing with dis’ ease that has been made final, I have only one solution: to pray that they believed in Jesus Christ. Pray for all those who will mourn for the loss of life by their choosing. Pray that they were given every resource to have come to a different conclusion.

Remember, these are challenging times. Reach out to the lonely and to those who live alone. You might be the person that they need to make a difference in their decision. Be vigilant!

Psalm 24:4-5 “Show me your ways, LORD, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the people You have divinely placed in my life who speak holy truth, love, and words of wisdom. Give me a heart of discernment to know when You are using someone to speak instruction into my heart and my circumstances and give me the strength and courage to follow through with that advice, even when it’s hard. Fill me with peace in knowing that even if I take a wrong turn, Your purpose will prevail. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
