Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 15:33, Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the LORD, and humility comes before honor.

🔴 Evil-Kill, Steals, & Destroys

For God’s righteous peace and holiness to sovereignly reign in the hearts of His people- evil must die. It isn’t easy to read the passages of mass murders and what seems to be senseless death, but we have the Words of Jesus Christ our Lord. In John 14:27, Christ tells His disciples, “I am leaving you with a gift-peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

As God’s people, we crave instruction and request understanding to apply and put it into practice. God turns our hearts towards His law to love Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, loving our neighbor as ourselves. And the selfish desire for personal gain decreases, turning our eyes away from all the worldly, meaningless things that distract from His Holiness (Psalm 119:37).

Why has God given us this incredible Divine Word?

So that we may know the Good News of Christ’s return and that when it happens, we will believe. We can celebrate our readiness because we have left nothing undone.

Some things will be easier to remove from your life, like- distractions, material things, or excuses. But to follow the command to remove toxic attitudes carried by fixed mindset people is challenging. God, through David, continued the process of weeding out the rebellious people. David did all that God commanded and humbled himself before the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. (‘Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?’ -2 Samuel 7:18b.)

If we ask for wisdom and understanding, be prepared to do something radical. God works to remove idolatry from the hearts of His people. We honor His work within us by remaining sober-minded and honest. Through prayer, ask God to reveal that which he has asked you to remove from your life. The reverent fear of the Lord is the starting point for wisdom; He will restore you with renewed strength in His ways (Psalm 119:37).

Guiding Scripture: 1 Samuel 29:4-5 ‘But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said, “Send the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master’s favor than by taking the heads of our own men? Isn’t this the David they sang about in their dances: “‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands?”

🔴Reputation

“Your reputation proceeds you.”
A frightening phrase if you’re not sure who gave an account of your character.

In 1 Samuel 30, David and his men crossed paths with an Egyptian near death on the road. His master left him because he was sick (teaching from Jesus is found in Luke 10:25-37).
We choose moment by moment how the information we receive will benefit ourselves alone or the entire company we keep.

If we have a reputation of discarding people who aren’t performing well or who don’t follow directions- we may be praised for efficiency. The truth is that we will never please everyone with our actions.

As we read the account of David’s life, we can see ourselves.

Our reputation to do God’s will and compassionately lead with love is glorifying to Him. Think about your opportunities to build on the greatness of Christ. Use His light to guide others.

Guiding Scripture: 1 Samuel 22:3-4 ‘And David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come [out of Judah] and stay with you until I know what God will do for me.” Then he left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.

🔴 Fear Murders

Death, deceit, and destruction- those are the thoughts that invaded me as I read 1 Samuel 22. God is protecting King David and providing for his household. Why were priests killed in the process? Who is Doeg the Edomite, and what did he gain from performing such a gruesome order from Saul?

We may not have the exact answer but, we can dissect the behavior because it is prevailing today. Fear, greed, and pride cause rebellion against our Almighty God. Before we insert ourselves into this narrative, we would be wise to think about the root. Where did these ideas begin? And why are we repeating the same cycle if we have the Lord’s Word as instruction?

Yes, today’s reading left me with more questions, and guess what? Our Savior Jesus Christ welcomes us to ask. If you wonder why evil things happen to good people, take it to Jesus through prayer. We worship a living Savior, One who guides and directs us. We only need to come to Him and submit to His truth.

Guiding Scripture:1 Samuel 17:23, ‘As he was talking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the army of the Philistines, and he spoke these same words again; and David heard him . ‘

🔴 A Different Perspective

For forty days, the Israelite and Philistine armies stood opposite one another with a valley between them. It may seem unusual for two armies to resist attacking in favor of one on one combat. In this case, a brave warrior was to fight Goliath, the champion from Gath. If the Israelites succeeded, the Philistines would be their servants; if not, the reverse would hold.

Every day the armies assembled in battle formation and waited. The Israelites were terrified. No one wanted to bear the burden of losing against the Philistine army and cause the entire nation to be their slaves. Perhaps a few warriors thought they could claim victory, but fear and doubt seized their hearts.

And then David…

David had not heard the constant taunting; he was not part of the daily conversations and wavering opinions. David had a fresh perspective and bold faith. He knew God had delivered him from the claws of lions and bears, so what made the Philistine any different?

We can claim victory in many situations if we trust God. He uses our developed talents to glorify His great Name. The next time you feel burdened by fear or the terror of failure hinders you from trying- take it to the Lord in prayer.

Identify the ruminations of your thoughts by talking to the Lord through prayer. Ask God to help you strategically plan a course of action. In this way, you remove yourself from the current surroundings and enter into a healthy meditation with our Abba Father. God becomes our source of strength and power when we trust His purpose for our lives.

Has God called you to give a fresh perspective?

Bible Study & Devotional Day 134

Written By: Torrie Slaughter

Guiding Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:22 ‘But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

🔴 People Pleasing

Have you ever thought you knew better than God? I know I have. It is a sin not to complete a mission and leave something undone. In today’s reading, Saul told the prophet, Samuel, that he kept the best of the cattle and King Agag to sacrifice to the Lord (1 Samuel 15:15). As students of the Bible, we knew Saul’s response wasn’t accurate. In 1 Samuel 15:9, Saul and his army were unwilling to destroy the ‘best’ of the Amalekite things because they had ‘value.’

It is challenging to eliminate something we think will benefit us later.

We create massive inner turmoil when we place the opinions of others before God’s command. After all, we are to love humans, develop unity and harmony, right?! But that’s the intersection and the training we undergo to die to self and obey Christ. We can not declare that God is the all-knowing Director of our lives if we reject His clear instructions.

Saul wavered between two opinions (1 Kings 18:21), those of the people and God’s absolute command. (1 Samuel 15:24) Saul feared his army over the Hand of God.

I have sinned in this way and straddled the fence to maintain my image and arrogantly thought I knew better. In the end, the wavering opinion destroyed relationships. As funny as it seems, people like consistency. Trusting God and following His command leaving nothing undone, may not win us congeniality awards. However, the light of Christ will shine brighter, which testifies to His sovereignty.

Will you choose to please all people or our All-Mighty Savior?
