🔴 WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY?

A Devotional written by Diana L.W. Coleman for Our Given Purpose®

Bible Reading: Isaiah 35:10, 1 Chronicles 16:27, Romans 12:19

1 Chronicles 16:27 “Splendor and majesty are before Him, Strength and joy are in His place.”

🔴 As a child, perhaps it is getting to play with your friends, having a pass from chores, homework, or a sleepover at grandparents who will indulge you with all the pizza and junk food late into the night—playing monopoly, watching cartoons, and having ice cream for breakfast with bacon, pancakes dripping with sugary syrup.

The years progress and you’re celebrating being a teen, perhaps getting your driver’s permit and looking forward to owning a car. Turning 18 and receiving the gift of a voter registration card.

Moving into a young adult, graduating from college, renting an apartment, landing your dream job, and being on your own is the next step in ‘adulting.’ Or maybe you’re more sensible and living at home, saving for a down payment on a home, or investing in your entrepreneurial venture.

As a parent, raising your children to revere the Lord and being productive while contributing successfully to society.
As a retiree, hoping you have passed each of the journeys mentioned above that your offspring is remembering, the acronym you taught them – what real J.O.Y. is.

They must protect and not give up, not one letter of J.O.Y. The J is for Jesus, the O for how He is the Only True God, and he requires Obedience, the Y is to remind them to never Yield to the temptation of falsehoods. Giving up the J leaves you saying O.Y.; giving up the O will have you crying Y!

Joy can only come from a right relationship with God. Without God, there is no J.O.Y. Don’t confuse what makes you happy with that which brings you J.O.Y.

Getting a pass from daily routines, permits, achievements, and worldly pleasures are temporary. Nehemiah 8:10b tells us, “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Isaiah 35:10 And the ransomed of the Lord will return and come with joyful shouting to Zion, with everlasting joy upon their heads. They will find gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

  • Do you want this JOY?
  • Will you ask Jesus to give you His Joy?

🔴 Are you Ready for Home Coming!

A Devotional written by Diana L.W. Coleman for Our Given Purpose®

Bible Reading: John 14:1-14, Psalm 84:1-12, Psalm 18:1-50

Psalm 18:20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

🔴 Living in my grandparents’ home as a child, every third Sunday in August was significant to our Chestnut Grove community (located in previously named Agricola, Virginia). All the flower beds had to be carefully weeded, vegetable gardens, trees had to be whitewashed with lime solution, grass cut, and the road freshly graveled. Everywhere including the chicken coops, barns, smokehouse, and even the “outhouse” actually got store-bought toilet paper to put on top of the Sears catalog.

Inside the house: walls were dusted, washed, or freshly painted, from ceilings to baseboards. The floors being waxed and shined was the favorite chore because we as children made a game of pulling each other on old woolen sweaters and scarves across the floor until the floors looked like glass. Once done, we would wait to see which relative from out of state would arrive first.

Beginning on Friday to be in place for Saturday activities: the barbecue (with Uncle John on the grill and the scent of his cherry tobacco filled pipe mixing with the aroma of the meats), baseball, “Jack Rocks,” Hide and Seek, “Mama May I,” card games, marbles, “Simon Says” and more.

The culminating daylong event was spending Sunday at Church. After the morning service was “dinner on the grounds” when we would go from one beautiful linen-covered tables with baskets and dishes of mac and cheese, yams, fresh greens, fried chicken, country ham, roast beef, homemade yeast rolls, cake, pie, choosing our favorites from who we thought had the best.

As an adult, having fond memories of this time in my life, I am reminded of an even better homecoming. I must prepare with the same enthusiasm and anticipation.

Jesus promised us in John 14, “…I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. “

How are you preparing for His Homecoming?

Are you cleaning out the sin of unforgiveness, unrighteousness, and injustice? Are you kindhearted and trustworthy?

As we would sing back in the day, “Yield Not to Temptation” – will you pray and just ask the Savior to help you?

🔴What Are You Missing?

Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:1-12; Psalm 16:1-11

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

🔴 Understanding– the power of abstract thought; intellect.

🔴 Discover – find (something or someone) unexpectedly or in the course of a search.

🔴 What have you discovered?

God is in the details. I have discovered being faithful leads to an increase in faith. Life changes abruptly but not without our Father knowing the facts.

Three weeks ago, I had a choice, undertake another significant project, or ignore the opportunity. Sound familiar?

In my humanness, I decided I could quit without anyone noticing. A half-hearted leap into unknown territory; fear was the root of my faith. BUT GOD! In the beginning, He transformed my heart and gave me the strength to give my best and work cooperatively to glorify Him.

Four days in- my new project became a beautiful way to meditate on God’s Word and ponder its instruction. Having a love for reading and seeking Him through scripture, the work quickly became a delight. I wanted to spend time researching, praying, and reflecting. As joy increased, so did my questions. Why Lord? Why would you have me start this? What should I release? As though He were expecting me, the Holy Spirit solved the mystery.

When you host an event, have a celebration, or host a dinner, preparation is required. Many things need to be accomplished so everyone can enjoy the gathering. However, a choice as to who will bear the work’s weight is up to the ‘manager.’ She decides to delegate, micro-manage, or be the sole orchestrator. With God, I discovered a new way to connect with other Christ-followers. But first, I needed to be willing to serve.

Has God asked you to add more of Him to your day?

Have you discovered Him in the details?

🔴What Are You Missing?

Bible Reading: Hebrews 11:1-40

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

🔴 Understanding– the power of abstract thought; intellect

🔴 Are you seeking deeper faith?

Sunday mornings feel different. For some, it’s an opportunity to sleep a little longer. Rest is vital for our health and to be clear-minded. Taking a day to focus on God and lay aside tasks is a great way to gain perspective. Being part of organizations that embrace the benefit stillness provides, lifts a burden of work. Everyone operates differently, and we may never know how overwhelmed someone feels at any time. Don’t fear you will miss out if everything isn’t the same. Be willing to unplug even if it’s only for a few hours. Turn off the phones, step away from the news, and enjoy the company of the Lord.

🔴What Steps Are You Missing?

Bible Reading: Hebrews 11:6

“And without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

🔴 Seek- search for and find someone or something.

Are you seeking God’s plan for your life?

I am an early riser and crave time with God. I read His word and ponder my day. I ask Him for direction and what I missed. Being curious about yesterday helps me identify ways I can be a better disciple moving forward.
Today take time to reflect. Talk with family and remember that we are here to be relational. Being a Christ-follower is not a business transaction but a call to love and serve.

“As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.”  ~ C.S.Lewis- Mere Christianity

Take action and move in the footsteps of Christ. We can trust that God goes before us. (Deuteronomy 31:8) Why not faithfully follow the One who knows all?

Matthew 7:8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
