Is Wealth Worthless?

Contributing Writer: Temi Michael-O

I love that this scripture does not simply say “wealth is worthless.” The truth is that wealth is not worthless because God gives us the power to get wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18). Wealth is an essential tool for meeting the needs of others. However, wealth without righteousness is worthless. Wealth cannot give eternal life.

Righteousness means right-standing and right-walking with God.

It means doing what’s right according to God’s Word (Acts 10:35).

Proverbs 11:4 calls us to live eternity-conscious because the things we possess in this world will not save us. Our deliverance from death- eternal torment (Revelation 21:8) and separation from the presence of God is only possible when we possess the God who empowers us to live in right-standing with him.

It is easy to become distracted in this day and age where we celebrate wealth than virtue. We must keep Proverbs 11:4 in mind and let it guide our financial decisions.

Here’s a helpful tip: Consider printing or writing out what’s written in Proverbs 11:4 and place it in your workspace.
