Unwanted Offerings

written by Torrie Slaughter

The Lord would not accept an offering of trash. Let’s be real here. God required an authentic, wholehearted sacrifice.

Teaching Moment

We can learn from God’s character and offer what we would desire (love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and neighbor as yourself). Like Cain became jealous of Abel because his offering pleased God, we too can envy the effort of others. Because we live in a society that does not celebrate the best offerings.

Fast. Instant. Mediocre.

God wants our wholeness and we need to desire it for ourselves. It is a constant training and involves patience.

“The key to missions is not work but prayer. Too often, work is used as a substitute for or a by-pass to fervent prayer.” Oswald Chambers

In striving to become more like Jesus we may try short cuts and forget to hand to God’s unchanging hand. And even when we do, our Lord is still there for us.

So how do we keep focused on Him and not stress about what we think we see happening?

Well, let’s briefly address the problematic verses of taking away the stumbling blocks. Did Jesus mean for us to amputate ourselves? The short answer no, of course not. The language dates back to the garden of Eden. Hand, foot, eye.

Eve saw(eye) the fruit was good in her eyes for making one wise. She gave(hand) it to her husband. They hid(foot) themselves when they heard God in the garden. Whatever means that you take that would cause you to sin is best avoided.

Proverbs 10:19 Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.

I pray we all hold to God’s truth and become patiently aware that our timing is not God’s. We can stand firm against the things that tempt us into forgetting to make healthy choices physically, spiritually, and mentally. Let us prepare to bring our best and give as though God were receiving it.
