Guiding Scripture: Mark 8:27-30: Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” 28 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.” 29 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.” 30 But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

Jesus wanted to test the disciples, a pop quiz if you will. He wanted to know if the disciples were gaining anything during their journey. They’ve been through a lot at this point, with more to come in the future.
In my opinion, a notable point is the other names they mention: John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets of old. And I do wonder if they had moments where they thought Jesus could be someone new.
Direct Question
Then Jesus asked them, “But who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:29a)
Peter buzzes in first and declares, “You are the Messiah.” Jesus is content with that answer and warns not to tell anyone.
Why is that?
Well, there could be a myriad of reasons. It could be not wanting the information to fall on deaf ears.
The Pharisees refused to admit who Jesus was until the end, and even then, not all believed. Similar to that, they could have hearts of stone. Just a blank refusal to admit who he was.
Earlier in the chapter, the Pharisees want signs. They want something physical. It wasn’t going to change their way of thinking. After all, their hearts were hardened. No matter how often they are proved wrong, they made excuses.
Lastly, it could simply be he wanted to wait until the proper time. Currently, Jesus is laying the groundwork, giving the duties, watching them grow, so the disciples will be able to pick up where they left off when he leaves. Sometimes we’re not expected to complete something in our current state. It can be our job to lay the groundwork for someone else complete, and God still gets the glory.
Prayer: Dear God, We know that we have our limits. However, we are limitless with you on our side. Allow us to complete our tasks in the way you wish. Amen
