Guiding Scripture: Matthew 24:1-28 (Signs of Christ’s Return)
Advance Warning
By contributing writer Tiffiany Langston
New Testament scripture doesn’t lack in speaking of end times, deception, and urging believers to stand firm. There are multiple teachings from Jesus and the apostles, giving anyone who reads the inspired word an advanced warning of what is to come. Warnings that are given from the heart of a long-suffering God that desires that none be lost.
In the referenced reading (Matthew 24:1-28), Jesus shared with His disciples about the tribulation – telling them what was to come so that they not be deceived. Jesus gives an advance warning, over and over throughout scripture of what to be on the lookout for and what is to be avoided.
We are given warnings in our everyday life, in many different ways, for different situations.
Offering us a choice in how we will respond. From the weather alert of a severe storm approaching, to the gas light coming on when our vehicle’s fuel is low, we receive an alert or warning almost daily. And, most prefer an advanced warning over an abrupt or delayed one.
But, when a warning comes from Jesus, it hits differently. In Psalm 8:4, David says “What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?”. To read these words of Jesus and to understand that He was answering the disciple from a desire that they not be deceived, is simply remarkable. To think that He knew these Words would be read today, giving us, the reader an opportunity to respond, should fill our hearts with wonder! For nothing is coincidental. It all adds to the mounting evidence of the kindness God has toward humanity.
There is no denying that the last days are among us. You don’t have to be up to date on recent events or the latest news to know that the condition of our world is worsening. Moral decline and hearts hardened to God appear directly before us in our homes, families, and communities.
Jesus will return soon.
He will rapture the church and the tribulation will then begin. You’ve been given an advanced warning. How will you respond?
