The Priceless Heirloom of Wisdom
Contributing Writer: Lindsey Capron
A few years ago, my mother handed me a black and white, houndstooth, cashmere scarf that she wore in high school. This scarf is one of a kind and still in excellent condition. It was a gift from her mother, and she thought it would be best to pass this vintage fashionable heirloom to me.
Usually, heirlooms are passed down the family line with specific significance and purpose. As it goes from generation to generation, the heirloom becomes more valuable and, in some cases, priceless.
In Proverbs 3:21-22, we see a father pass down to his son one of the greatest gifts I believe any parent can give their child: words of godly wisdom.
“My son, let them not depart from your eyes – Keep sound wisdom and discretion; So, they will be life to your soul and grace to your neck.”- Proverbs 3:21-22
The father gives admonition about keeping wisdom but why wisdom is so important and what it do for his son. This gift of wisdom wasn’t just something for one time but for all time. This gift was to serve a lifelong purpose with benefits lasting for generations.
Just like the father in proverbs who passed down wisdom to his son, God has given us His word and his wonderful wisdom in it. We have 66 books comprised into one that’s full of God’s wisdom to work as life to our soul and grace to our necks.
Godly wisdom keeps us out of trouble and from stumbling blindly through life.
We can also pass that wisdom down to future generations to keep them from making the mistakes that cost generations before us.
Worldly wisdom given to us will often change. But God’s wisdom will remain steadfast and the same.
In these dark times, it’s important to seek Godly wisdom for ourselves so we can gift them to others. This kind of wisdom won’t steer us wrong while we’re dealing adversity and even the wicked. Prayer, seeking God’s Character through His word, and deeply relying on the Holy Spirit is how we gain wisdom.
My mother’s beautiful cashmere houndstooth scarf is most certainly a priceless heirloom that I hope to keep as long as I can. But I know that it will eventually wear out and fade. As the scarf unravels and loses its bold color, I know that I can always wear the godly wisdom I’ve been taught around my neck. And that heirloom never goes out of style.
