What Are You Receiving and Speaking?

By Lindsey Capron

Our words have tremendous power. They have the power to create and destroy. Because we’re made in God’s image, having this power is an amazing gift and a sobering responsibility.

We live in a time where the fruit of quick-witted retorts, sarcasm, and deceit are grown, found, and picked from the tree of communication. Life-giving fruit is scarce and, at times, non-existent. When eating into the fruit of perverse words, we sow the seeds that are a remnant from the fruit we ate, which leads to more soul-crushing words.

Proverbs 15:4 gives a twofold approach to life-giving and perverse words. It’s true; we have a great responsibility to watch our words. It’s also equally important to be mindful of the words we’re feeding in our spirits.

What we gravitate towards will feed and nourish our spirits, ultimately producing the fruit that comes from it. What we receive in our spirits is what we’ll eventually believe.

Deceit stems from pride. It lies to us, giving us false information while appearing factual. Once received, it chips and crushes our spirits because we traded its inconsistent “truth” for a lie. No wonder the world has become crueler, and some believers live defeated lives.

  • So, how can we know what is true?
  • How can we receive and speak life-giving words?

We turn to God’s word, which is the absolute truth, the Bible.

God’s everlasting word is consistent with the truth. When we consistently receive and nourish our spirits with God’s life-giving truth, we can produce a fruitful harvest that we can joyfully feast on while sowing seeds of healing into others.

Our wholesome words can choke out death and bring hope, life, and healing to hurting people.

What words are you receiving and giving to yourself and others? Are you a spirit lifter or a crusher? The world has enough spirit crushers. May we choose to accept and speak life from God’s word today.
