Laying It All Down

by founding writer Torrie Slaughter

Let’s focus on the word clothes. Clothes or  cloak is defined as A long flowing outer garment, tunic. Clothes hold a significant place in our lives, not just as a necessity for covering ourselves, but also as a representation of our identity and status. We identify people in service by their clothes because they have distinct uniforms. Doctors wear white medical jackets if they are seeing patients and scrubs if they are performing surgery. Firemen, police officers, chefs, athletes they all wear clothes that help you to identify what they do or who’s team they are on.

So if you think about designers and the cost for quality material or the amount of time it takes to make one piece such as a tailored suit or a ball gown you may not think of these items as something you would place on the road for a donkey to tread over.

And yet

The act of laying down one’s garment for someone else signifies respect, submission, and honor. In Luke 19:35-36, we see how the people of Jerusalem laid down their clothes for Jesus as he entered the city riding on a donkey.

In that culture, laying down one’s garment for someone to walk on was a sign of submission and homage to the person being honored. By laying down their garments, the people of Jerusalem acknowledged Jesus as their king and demonstrated their reverence for him.

This act also serves as a reminder of our own humility and the importance of honoring those who are worthy of it. It is a call for us to treat others with respect and to recognize their worth and value.

There are other instances in the Bible where people laid down their coats as a sign of respect and submission.

In 2 Kings 9:13, we see how the people of Israel laid down their coats for Jehu as a sign of their acceptance of him as their new king. These instances serve as a reminder of the importance of humility and respect in our lives. We are called to lay down our own desires, ambitions, and pride for the sake of honoring others and acknowledging their worth. It is a call to submit to God’s authority and recognize his sovereignty over our lives.

Dear friend are you willing to take off your identity, your clothes, the way you are recognized in society for Jesus?

If so YES!!! Hallelujah Because you are giving up control of your life and allowing Jesus to be the center. This is a fundamental step towards spiritual growth, maturity, and ultimate fulfillment in life. LET’S MOVE INTO,the importance of submitting everything to Jesus and how it can transform our lives.

First and foremost, submitting everything to Jesus means surrendering our will and desires to Him. It means acknowledging that we are not the masters of our lives and that we need guidance and direction His Holy divine power we are in need of a Savior. This is not an easy thing to do, as it requires us to let go of our pride and self-centeredness. However, when we surrender to Jesus, we open ourselves up to His love, grace, and wisdom, which transforms us from the inside out.

Secondly, submitting everything to Jesus means trusting in His sovereignty and power. It means recognizing that Jesus is in control of everything and that He has a plan for our lives. This can be comforting in times of uncertainty or difficulty, as we can rest assured that Jesus is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). When we trust in Jesus’ sovereignty, we can let go of fear, worry, and anxiety and have peace in our hearts.

Thirdly, submitting everything to Jesus means living a life of obedience to Him. It means following His teachings, living according to His will, and serving Him with our whole hearts. This is not always easy, as we are often tempted to do things our way or to conform to the standards of the world. However, when we submit to Jesus, we become His disciples, and He promises to guide us in the way of righteousness (John 14:15).

Finally, submitting everything to Jesus means experiencing true freedom and fulfillment. When we try to control our lives, we often find ourselves feeling empty, restless, and unfulfilled. However, when we submit to Jesus, we discover that He has a plan and purpose for our lives that goes beyond anything we could imagine (Ephesians 3:20). We experience the joy of living according to His will, and our lives become a testimony of His love and grace.

In conclusion, submitting everything to Jesus is essential for spiritual growth, maturity, and fulfillment in life. It requires us to surrender our will and desires to Him, trust in His sovereignty, live a life of obedience, and experience true freedom and fulfillment. When we submit to Jesus, we become His disciples, and He promises to transform us from the inside out. So let us submit everything to Jesus and experience the abundant life He has for us.

As we go about our daily lives, let us remember the significance of our garments and the importance of laying them down for those who are worthy of our respect and honor. May we always strive to live a life that honors God and respects others, just as the people of Jerusalem did for Jesus during his triumphal entry.
