Never Again

by contributing writer: Tiffiany Langston

I’ll never do that again.
I would never hurt you.
I would never leave you.
You mean the world to me, I would never!

These expressions, from well-meaning people, have been left unfulfilled and bring a swell of negative emotions and memories.

Hearing the words ‘never again’ can instantly trigger negative feelings that will have you reeling.

Or there’s the guilt and shame that threaten to creep in –

be good enough

get that opportunity

be loved

have peace

amount to anything

We’ve been conditioned to hear the words ‘never’ and connect it to a negative. But, as with so much, that is not the case with God!

When we read of ‘never’ in scripture, it often resounds to a positive – indicative of a promise or covenant – that should encourage and build us up.

  • Hebrews 13:5b – God said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.
  • Genesis 9:11b – Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.
  • Joel 2:27b – never again will my people be shamed.
  • John 6:35 – Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty”.
  • John 8:12 – When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Yes, there is so much in this life that is uncertain and fails us, but not God – Luke 1:37 tells us – For no word from God will ever fail. We do not have to doubt what God has said. We can rest, have a reckoning, and be reassured that not only in the life to come but even in this life, His promises stand true – He is a man of His word! We can be assured that in eternity there will never again be tears, pain, sorrow, or suffering.

We will never again have evil or a spiritual battle to armor up for and we will be in the presence of Jesus forever more. I don’t know about you, but I’m living with expectancy for every single one of these ‘never agains’!

You may currently be facing or struggling with the failures of another flawed human being. I’ve prayed that as you read this you are convicted, comforted and convinced of the goodness of God. That you believe and live knowing, that when he says never again, he means it.

You have the freedom to progress in His love, opening your heart to experience the beauty and wonder of this life.

Beloved, you are seen, chosen, and kept by the everlasting God. Choose to receive it today. Then, extend the same to the world around you. Invite others into a relationship with God by living out what you believe in. The world is desperately in need of the good news of the gospel. Remember the love and grace extended to you, so that you could live in His glory forever. There is no one like our God.
