Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 29:19-20 (KJV) Servants cannot be corrected by mere words; though they understand, they will not respond. Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them.

Practice Self-Control

by contributing writer Temi Michael-O

While reading Proverbs 29:19, I wondered how many slave masters used this scripture to justify treating their slaves harshly. Then I checked Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on the scriptures. It says, “Here is an unprofitable, slothful, wicked servant; one that serves not from conscience, or love, but from fear.”

While we are servants of God, God does not want us to have the mindset of an enslaved person. God calls us servants, children, friends, priests, etc., so we can respond to his corrections based on our relationship with Him. It is easier to respond or submit to someone when we know they love us or have our best interests in mind.

God’s Word is available for correction here on earth (2 Timothy 3:16).

As we submit to God’s correction, we save ourselves from the heartaches and pain caused by the rejection of discipline (Proverbs 15:32)

Proverbs 29:20 calls us to practice mindfulness in our communication. Today, practice hearing more attentively and listen to understand others before you respond. I pray for the grace to practice self-control today.
