Holy and Set Apart

by contributing writer Sheila Arrington

When I first read God said, “Be Holy as I am Holy, it caused me to feel intimidated and somewhat overwhelmed. In today’s world, what does that mean, and how does it look? I quickly understood it meant the same thing as when God inspired those written words. Holy means to set apart, to put our hope fully on Christ, the grace given to us as Jesus Christ revealed. As we become more and more like Jesus, we begin living and doing what God has purposed.

We don’t conform to the ways of this world; as Christ is revealed, we prepare our minds and be renewed according to the WORD and the not world.

Therefore, being holy is not saying we are perfect; Holy means sanctifying through Christ.

It does not mean we are better than anyone else. We are going to make mistakes. In our conduct and life, we live to be pleasing to God. How should we live among unbelievers? How should our lives look to win them over? Peter addresses the way Christians conduct themselves while living among unbelievers.

  • Should they withdraw from society?
  • Should they seek to fit in?
  • Should they spend their lives protesting the evils of society?
  • What would God have them do?
  • What would God have us do?

He doesn’t want us to withdraw, fit in, or spend life in protest. Instead, God simply guides us to live out our faith in the lost world. Engage in the good living taught in 1 Peter 2:11-12.

Peter explains that we are to live peacefully in society. But, as God’s society, and while living as exiles, we are not called to rebellion but to serve, and Peter repeatedly calls this doing good. We are to be do-gooders while living as exiles. But, one day at a time, let’s live holy as God calls us to be holy.

Dear Father, This day, let me be set apart for the good works you have purposed for me. Amen.
