Bible Study & Devotional Day 303
Guiding Scripture: Hebrews 1:3 ‘The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.’
Above the Angels
written by: Torrie Slaughter
Did you know that the Old Testament is quoted or alluded to 86 times in this letter to the Hebrews? The divine comparisons and contrasts presented throughout Hebrews is an opportunity for Christ-followers to embrace Jesus as our eternal High Priest. He is the Savior of the world and mediates on our behalf. Not believing in Christ Jesus is to nail Him to the cross and reject His generous gift of eternal life.
The Role of Angels
Angels are divine creations and perform different tasks. An angel could be a messenger, servant, lookout, or protector. {Quick sidenote – In Job 2:1 calls angels the ‘sons of God.’ That sheds another light on Satan’s fall and is worth exploring. When I forget how graceful and patient God is, I remember His Fatherly love.}
The Impact of Purification
The evil that exists between people and God ruins the environment of the relationship. Because people cannot save themselves, sacrifices temporarily restore the relationship caused by sin. God does not look favorable on sin, yet He is with us and calls us to repent (Acts 17:30). (Exodus 30:10) In the Old Testament, priests atoned for people’s sins through animal sacrifice; Jesus is our High Priest, making atonement for the world as an unblemished Lamb. Now we all have an opportunity to have God reign on the throne of our hearts.
It Is Done
It is a wonderous and mighty action that Jesus’ work on the cross completely shut down the blood sacrifice system. The life of Christ Jesus is an eternal reminder that He offered everything so we can abundantly live while abiding in Him. Jesus sits on the throne because He is God, and His role is different from the Son. Our perfect Triune God continues to be Sovereign.
Key Takeaway
Jesus Christ is supreme in all His work. God spoke through His Son Jesus, and people are redeemed through belief in the Cross. Jesus Christ is superior to all the holy angels. (Hebrews 1:1-14)
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You sit enthroned forever, and your renown endures through all generations. Please help us remember your ultimate sacrifice so that we can walk faithfully as your servants. Amen
