As we conclude Paul’s second letter to Timothy, Paul included his last will and testament. A few final requests before his execution. In 2 Timothy 4:6-18, we find detailed instructions and the significance Paul placed on friendship. These verses also let us know how thorough Paul was at setting his “house in order.”
2 Timothy 4:13, ‘When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.’
Why would a man facing death need his belongings?
The short answer, to make sure they were with the right person(s).
Paul encouraged Timothy and urged him to keep doing the Lord’s work just as he did. When God reveals his plan to us, we have a responsibility to carry out His vision. Just as King David knew he would not build the temple, that didn’t stop him from providing the necessary materials for his son Solomon. (1 Chronicles 22:1-8)
While following Jesus, let us not forget about the people we leave to clean up our ‘mess.’ The state of our finances, home, family, and businesses are part of the blessings God entrusted to us. We ought not to allow our benefits to create bitterness for our loved ones.
As you read chapter four through a different lens, think about what you want others to bring to you. Will you pass down items of value?
Prayer: Lord, help us to prioritize your plan and faithfully serve you. Thank you for your mercy and love. Thank you for helping us use our wealth, the abundance you provide as a tool to bless others. Amen
