Guiding Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ‘All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.’

Effective Help

written by: Torrie Slaughter

As the Apostle Paul predicts the rise of dangerous enemies to the Gospel, he warns Timothy by prescribing remedies against them. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 feels very now, today, present tense. In some ways, we can find comfort and draw strength from these facts because we are reminded that God has seen it all. There is nothing new under the sun, and we worship a living God who can and will provide an escape for His children.

Psalm 46:1 AMP “God is our Refuge and Strength [mighty and impenetrable to temptation], a very present and well-proved help in trouble.”

How can we use 2 Timothy 3 as a tool for everyday living?

  1. Heeding the warnings of the last days and not neglecting our responsibilities. Using our feelings as a gauge, not a guide when we come up against those who reject God’s Truth. (2 Timothy 3: 1-9)
  2. Understand the world embraces deception and lies. It opposes God’s Goodness, and we that live by His commandment will suffer persecution. (2 Timothy 3:10-13)
  3. The Word of the Lord was taught to Timothy by his mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois. We may have elders who trained us to know the Scriptures from childhood. (2 Timothy 3:14-15)
  4. All Scripture is given by Divine inspiration, and we can continue accomplishing the goals of the Kingdom. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

With the Old Testament in mind, Paul reminds us that everything the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob foretold is true. The Word from the Lord is relevant now and convicts those with contrite hearts.

Prayer:

Lord, we need Thee every hour. Please help us to seek You and Your goodness. Even when we face persecution, do not let our hearts grow faint. Amen
