Guiding Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-16 ‘Therefore, consider carefully how you live, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of the time because the days are evil. ‘

The Ephesians were once in darkness and needed a Savior to show them the Light. As Paul continues His teaching, we have the opportunity to examine our lives. The light Jesus provides is truth, and when we confess our sins, God opens our hearts to wise living.
Imitate God the Father
In Ephesians 5:1-2, Paul makes a simple observation that embodies the way God’s children should think and behave. To walk in love, following the example of Christ is multi-faceted. Love requires listening, understanding, and forgiving others.
Google defines love as encompassing a range of powerful emotional and mental states. Everything from the most sublime virtue or good habit to the deepest interpersonal affection, to the purest pleasure.
No wonder love is the greatest command! If we follow in the footsteps of Jesus, we will desire to express His divine love.
Paul also told the Ephesians things to avoid. These are practical, seemingly obvious things, but anyone could fall victim to walking in darkness depending on the circumstance.
What are the red flags?
- Unclean Speech– The Apostle Paul warns us about our language. Our vocabulary leads to perverse thoughts and behavior. Avoiding conversations that entertain dirty jokes, foolishness, or dishonoring talk is beneficial to our minds. (Ephesians 5:4)
- Sexual sin: God ordained marriage to exist between one man and one woman. Their hearts are joined as well as their flesh. To deviate from God’s gift is to violate His intent. (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:5, Matthew 5:28)
- Gullible– Entertaining people who speak foolishly of tempting us to do things contrary to God’s will, invites His anger. The Holy Spirit gives us discernment, the wisdom to know the difference between truth and deception. (Ephesians 5:6-7)
As you read through today’s passages, think about your current lifestyle. Are you prepared to avoid the darkness? Is Jesus your Light?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, help us make you our priority. Your plans are higher, and your teaching is good. We know You are near to us. Would you please help us identify the areas that are not beneficial to the body of Christ? Amen
