Troubled: God’s Way Out

Contributing writer: Sheila Arrington

Does God chasten those He loves? Once I was carrying a deep burden concerning a wrong I had committed, and I was ashamed. I sinned before God, and it festered. The wound from my sin was deep. I kept it in my heart and tried to keep it from God. (I know impossible, for He knows every heart.) On the day of my Psalm 38 erupted, hands over my head, I lamented before God and confessed my sin before Him.

David’s conviction for his sin and disobedience to God’s commandments nagged at his conscience. His recollection of what he had done was a “heavy burden” (Psalm 38:4). He was heavily troubled without peace and mourned over his wrongdoing continually (Psalm 38:6, 8). The leader knew that the Spirit of God tried to prevent him from going down the path he chose, but David ignored (Psalm 38:13 — “I, as a deaf man”) His pleadings to his heart.

Many of us get to the point David found himself. Our past haunts us. We are troubled by our sin, and our guilt endlessly gnaws.

When troubled and burdened by sin, our souls can do one of two things. One choice is to heed the Holy Spirit’s reminder, confess our iniquity to God, stop, turn away, and repent. Having a broken spirit, as David had, can lead us to change our direction to go on renewed, having to turn and follow the ways of our God once more. Let us keep a repentant heart.

Please pray with me: Dear God, may we not ever be far from you with a heart of flesh. Give us a heart that is quick to repent and forgive. Amen.
