Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 19:13-14, A foolish child is a father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like the constant dripping of a leaky roof. 14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

 🔴 The Uninhabitable Home

Contributing Writer: Tiffiany Langston

This world may not be our home, but our homes here on this side of heaven can be a place of refuge. I know because I now live in a home-like this, but I didn’t grow up in one like it. Inconsistency, chaos, and misery filled my childhood home. I had no safe haven from the ways of the world around me, which caused me to desire to be anywhere but there.

It was uninhabitable.

Not materialistically or from what could be seen with the physical eye, but from what went unseen – the emotional, spiritual, and mental neglect.

Of course, in those years, I didn’t understand what was wrong or why it felt so off, but now as an adult, I get it. My childhood innocence was stolen from me. My soul knew that was not how it was supposed to be. That home should have been a place of solstice where you could be yourself – shelter from a harsh, critical, and unkind world. But instead, it confirmed the lies I had heard, and for a long time, I sought to do whatever it took to escape the pain of a tragic beginning.

As an adult, a wife, and a mother, God has guided me on what a relationship with Him looks like and how when I live to honor Him, my home will be the place I longed for as a child. By His grace, I now have a peaceful home with people who allow me to show up as myself and seek to nurture one another along this sojourn.

I’m a homebody these days.

I would be quite alright, never leaving my house. When my husband is away, he misses us and desires to return and be with us. My children are so chill and happy here. They would rather every sleepover or gathering happen at our house because they love it and are proud to call it their home.

To be alive and experience this level of God’s goodness is beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Especially when I didn’t have that example in those formative years of what a home filled with the fullness of Jesus was.

But, the Lord is faithful to the righteous.

He has not only given back what was stolen, but my double portion – my dynamic A team will be the generation that tells a different story. The story of a habitable home, filled with love, laughter, peace, and the presence of God.
