Read Today’s Passages (July  4, 2022)

Guiding Scripture: Psalm 2:10, “Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth!”

🔴 Are You A Chain Breaker?

Contributing Writer: Christina Price

The wisdom in this verse seems to be what was missing from all of today’s portion of scriptures. In the chapters of Kings, from Jehoahaz to Jehoiakim to Jehoiachin to Zedekiah, they all did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, repeating the mistakes of their ancestors.

Specifically, during Zedekiah’s reign, the famine in the city had become very severe while the Babylonians sieged the city and captured the King. The Babylonians made Zedekiah watch as they slaughtered his sons and then gorged his eyes out. As I read through these historical events, my nerves were wedged between sheer terror and the unbelief of how things went from bad to worse. I couldn’t help but think, if one person changed their actions, how much the cycle would have changed.

As you read today’s devotion, I pose this question to the reader:

Are you a chain breaker?

In our lives, we are often warned of the wrong path, whether directly or indirectly, through the actions of others. As a parent of two children, I’ve become so intentional in identifying the strongholds in our family that might affect them down the line. Strongholds can lead to negative emotions such as bitterness, anger, pride, sadness, envy, etc., leading to destructive behaviors like depression, drunkenness, physical abuse, drug use, and more. In identifying and breaking these cycles, we bind the enemy and cancel his strategies to keep our family bond.

What negative cycles exist now in your family? Consider this moment as being warned. How will you act wisely? In other words, what are you choosing to correct now to change the course for future generations?

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your faithful love that endures forever. Today, I repent for unhealthy behaviors that I’ve let slide. Thank you for equipping me with all I need to provide a successful foundation for future generations. I pray that your Word continues to be a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Today I choose life so my descendants and I may live in you forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
