Bible Study & Devotional Day 179
Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 18:3 ‘When wickedness comes, so does contempt, and with shame comes reproach.’
🔴Evil in the Lord’s Sight
Written by: Torrie Slaughter
The Kings of Northern and Southern Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. 1 and 2 Kings have that statement in common. Their wickedness was the first glimpse into what kind of character they had before we read about their reign.
First Impression
Do we measure the differences between divine and wicked by the Lord’s standard? In our eagerness to discover how someone displays their sinful nature, we may excuse particular behaviors. Because Jesus gives us grace, we can be graceful. But we know that God is jealous (Exodus 20:5) for us, and He hates wickedness(Proverbs 6:16-19). Our first impression of God isn’t His anger but His love (John 3:16).
The other fascinating fact about the character study of the kings is how the Bible defines their actions. It was measured first to the previous king and, in most cases, to David (2 Kings 14:3). While David wasn’t perfect, He did what was right in the Lord’s eyes because he expressed sorrow for his sins.
As you read today’s passages, think about the impression you make on others. If people summarized you in one statement, have you done right or wrong in the Lord’s sight? How deep would one need to dig to find goodness? The mounds of deeds we do will be a standing ground for the next generation.
Prayer: Father, we thank you for the undeserved kindness you show us. Please help us in our unbelief that we may wholeheartedly follow your commands. We want others to remember the love and compassion we have shown by living a disciplined life. We know we can only do that with You as our guide. Teach us your ways and help us always to acknowledge the wisdom you provide. Thank you for Your Son, Jesus. Amen

If only we would look in the mirror first – perhaps we would not be as judgmental. Keep up the excellent writing and giving us food for our souls. Love agape,Mom
