🔴What’s in the Water?
Written by: Torrie Slaughter
In today’s passages, we read about King David crossing the Jordan river and Jesus’ disciples returning to their profession of fishermen.
What an exciting parallel?!?
When Christ said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.” I see these events as a contrasting manifestation of what it is like to bear the burden of our sinful nature.
In 2 Samuel 19-20, King David continues to struggle among the tribes because of the divided loyalty. He is returning to his throne after the death of Absalom. We also read that Ziba slandered Mephibosheth taking advantage of an opportunity to receive more provisions for his large family.
The waters are muddy, and if you have trouble keeping up with who is for King David and who opposes him, don’t worry; you’re not alone.
Remember, these narratives serve several purposes.
To give an account of:
- the transfer of earthly dynasties
- the battles fought to maintain his leadership
- interpersonal relationships with people and God
- God’s grace during rebellion
These are just a few.
While you read, remember God and the life Christ came to give abundantly.
The struggle for power in this fallen world will only lead to conflict, chaos, and death. As we look to Jesus in the Gospel of John 21, we read that the disciples toiled through the night (John 21:3) for something Jesus had waiting(John 21:9) for them.
What a beautiful story of what Heaven will be. Those who are waiting and the ones we bring with us.
I previously stated that 1 and 2 Samuel are great books to dive into self-examination as you study their behaviors. I urge you not to allow your psyche to circle the drain of deathly gossip and hypocritical attitudes. Remain humble and allow the Word of God to teach, mold, and refine as the Holy Spirit guides you into all truth and understanding (John 16:13)
