Guiding Scripture: Then two hundred men from Jerusalem who were invited [as guests to his sacrificial feast] went with Absalom. They went innocently and knew nothing [about his plan against David]. ‘ 2 Samuel 15:11 AMP

🔴 Instincts, Facts, and the Holy Spirit

written by: Torrie Slaughter

All the feels. There are places, people, and things that make us happy. We are glad to be part of a particular event until we find out the truth.

Pulling back the curtain, we find disorder, rebellion, and actions against the God we serve.

Dismissing alarming facts isn’t easy. That is where we plant seeds of justification. Those seeds say things like: ‘This is the only way. – No one else has offered to help.- It won’t always be like this.’

Justifying the minor infractions serves as a path to destruction. While we excuse specific behaviors to support a desire, we risk many becoming disillusioned. The innocent may never recover from the effects and, worse yet, may teach that method to others.

Unity includes conversation, accountability, and being on one accord.

As you read today’s passages, think about your relationship with your family, friends, coworkers, and community. What are the dividing factors? Another question to consider is: How did we get to this point?

Self-reflection and examination through character study in 1 and 2 Samuel help us not to feel alone. God continued to be with His people even when they rebelled. Christ Jesus, our Lord, gave the Holy Spirit to those who believe. We worship an omnipresent living God, and He allows us to choose Him.

If you need to make a difficult decision, the Holy Spirit can guide you. Our God is not asking us to ignore our human feelings, instincts, or the facts we understand. However, we can trust our gracious Lord to direct us towards godly wisdom. The things we innocently go along with may have devastating effects later.

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.’ Proverbs 16:9
