Read Today’s Passages (March 3, 2022)

Guiding Scripture:  Mark 11:13-14, “And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.  And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

🔴 Mountain Moving Faith

By Detria Moore

There is power in your words!  Do you believe that you have faith to move mountains?

That is exactly what Jesus conveyed to his disciples in this chapter. Jesus has made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem.  He is hungry when He sees a fig tree with leaves on it, but ends up cursing the fig tree; even though, as Mark explains, it was not the season for figs.

This might seem extreme.  Why curse a fig tree when it’s not even in season?

A lot of commentaries agree that Jesus cursed the fig tree, because even if it was out of season, it was giving the appearance of bearing figs when in actuality it was not.  It produced leaves, which signaled that it should have fruit.  Jesus didn’t want the fig tree to deceive anyone else.

But let’s also examine another example.  This story picks back up in verse 20.  When Peter points out that the fig tree Jesus had cursed the day before now stood withered to the root, Jesus’ response is about more than just deception.

It’s about faith.

He’s reminding the disciples that they too have power to speak to the mountains and tell it to be cast in the sea, if they believe and do not doubt.  These are not ‘name it and claim it prayers.’ They must be in alignment with the scripture and in the will of God.  If you are praying according to God’s will and in alignment with the Holy Scriptures, you must believe that you will receive what you have prayed.

When prayer and faith collide, God moves!

The fig tree was cursed because of the Power in Jesus’ words.  He wanted to use this as an example to tell his disciples that they too had power to speak into situations.  What is an area of your life that you need to speak into?  Remember there is POWER in your words.  Have faith, and do not doubt!
