Guiding Scripture: Jonah 1:12 ‘ “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
Cross Reference: 2 Samuel 24:17, “When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the shepherd, have sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”

The story of Jonah encourages me to seek the Lord for every decision. These devotionals focused on fear over the last several days, and today’s assigned reading gives us another example. (To think that Jonah eventually accepted the blame for his sinful actions showed courage during a spiritual storm.)
On Sunday, I provided character traits of selfless leaders and how they handle situations. While it isn’t easy to admit our faults and publicly announce our shortcomings, the truth is liberating.
Today as you read the book of Jonah, think about your idol worship, people-pleasing, and fear of humans.
Jonah 2:8, “Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.”
Let us not turn our backs on all of God’s mercies. Through Christ, we can submit to self-examination and allow His Word to transform our hearts.
Prayer: Lord, help us have a reverential fear of you, our savior. May you inspire spiritual sensitivity, love, compassion, forgiveness, grace, and mercy as you do so for each of us. Would you please help us operate in the miraculous deliverance from the traps and snares we set for ourselves? Thank you for providing a place for us to reflect and make changes. Amen.
