Guiding Scripture: James 4:8, ‘Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.’
🔴 Draw Close to God
written by: Torrie Slaughter
This portion of James’ letter inspires me to self-examination. Why? Because I experience a great deal of anxiety and worry about how my feelings impact others. If we remember that God does not give us a ‘spirit’ of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7), that means we are not acting out of temporary emotions but through an evil spirit.
God urges us to humble ourselves before Him, resist the devil, and he will flee (James 4:7). That speaks to the firm foundation of our heart-minds. Remaining steadfast when we face trials of every kind is a discipline that will bring us close to God.
As you read today’s passages, think about James’ message to the church. We are encouraged to have a posture of humility and repentance because we cannot accomplish anything without God. Our loyalty should drive us to increase our awareness of the spiritual forces that control our feelings. The more often we do that we will practice walking in the will of God and not our pridefulness.
Prayer: Lord, please teach us to number our days that we may gain hearts of wisdom. Let us make the most of our time, and may our speech always be seasoned with grace so that we remember your mercy towards us. Thank you for your patience, Lord. I lift those who are hurting, confused, and have given in to prideful behavior. Abba Father, please remove us from the toxic environments, and cleanse our minds. Please help us to focus on Christ Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
