Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 21:14 ‘A gift given in secret soothes anger, and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.’
We could hear the screams of the baby throughout the store. Every mom looked around to catch the direction and perhaps offer assistance. As I reached the check-out line, I saw a mother with four children, each vying for her attention as she attempted to gather her well-organized coupons. As if by instinct, three women circled her and started talking to the younger children, and I had the pleasure of rocking the newborn.
All of us knew the challenge of shopping with children. No judgment. No scornful looks, just love, and understanding. Once the mom completed her transaction, she thanked all of us and left the store.
In the chaos of this world, it is easy to get angry or annoyed when our peace is disturbed. Public places have an expectation of being calm and orderly. However, the controlled environment is no match for a hungry baby. I know each of the women who came to the rescue that day saw the look of frustration and exhaustion on the struggling mother’s face. We all sympathized.
Perhaps you know how it feels to be overwhelmed, and anger is your go-to emotion because it is convenient. I pray that you can show love or give love even to a struggling stranger no matter which side you find yourself on. Your secret gift may be just the thing that offers enough hope to continue moving forward.
