Guiding Scripture: Proverbs 20:5 ‘The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.’

🔴Profound

There is a reason Proverbs 20:5 is my scriptural vision statement. God is our source of wisdom, and we can continue to seek His guidance to grow in understanding.

Before we draw anything out, we must acknowledge any errors in our thinking or behavior: Proverbs 20:1-4 layout warnings and things we should avoid.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine causes you to make fun of others, and beer causes you to start fights. Anyone who is led down the wrong path by them is not wise.

Being drunk with alcohol doesn’t leave space for the Holy Spirit. We are choosing comfort and foolishness over sacrifice.

Proverbs 20:2 A king’s anger is like a lion’s roar. Anyone who makes him angry may lose his life.

We cannot fully comprehend the wrath of God. King Solomon warns us not to provoke God’s divine anger so we will not lose our life.

Proverbs 20:3 Avoiding a fight brings honor to a man. But every foolish person is quick to argue.

A hostile person has a shallow heart; anger is a defense. If you notice how these proverbs direct us towards becoming more intellectually mature.

Proverbs 20:4 Anyone who refuses to work doesn’t plow in the right season. When he looks for a crop at harvest time, he doesn’t find it.

Seeking wisdom is work, as is physical labor. Being idle and thinking we have more time to do the will of the Lord is flirting with disaster. The harvest is always plentiful because our God is the Gardener. If we do not cultivate what He has given, we are rebelling against our Lord.

Proverbs 20:5 begs us to become more curious about our destiny. What is God’s will for our lives? How can we use reverse engineering to apply His Truth to our current circumstances?

As you read today’s passages, think about how God’s Word is relevant. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you dive deeper into Truth.

Prayer: Lord, we humbly come before you. Please help us to seek your guidance that we may navigate this life as an expression of Christ Jesus.
